Description
William Harnden “Coming Home at Sunset” Oil Painting | American Western Landscape
An atmospheric American Western landscape by William Harnden (1920–1983), depicting a Native American encampment at sunset in a dramatic winter landscape.
Titled “Coming Home at Sunset,” this evocative oil on board captures the quiet transition from daylight into evening. A brilliant orange sun descends behind distant blue and violet mountains, illuminating the water and snow-covered foreground with reflections of turquoise, gold, lavender, and icy blue. A mounted figure accompanied by a second horse approaches a group of tipis, where the warm glow of firelight provides an intimate contrast to the cool surrounding landscape.
Harnden’s expressive handling of color and light gives the scene a strong sense of atmosphere and narrative. Rather than treating the landscape simply as a backdrop, the artist uses the setting sun, reflective water, distant mountains, and glowing encampment to create a composition centered on mood and the idea of returning home.
Signed by the artist at the lower right, Coming Home at Sunset is a compelling example of Harnden’s landscape and figurative work. Harnden is identified in artist references as a painter known for landscapes, figures, and architectural subjects, while this particular work has also been documented in the marketplace under its title and with the same 18 x 24-inch dimensions. (askART)
With its rich sunset palette, Western subject matter, and strong visual presence, the painting would appeal to collectors of American Western art, Native American-themed art, mid-20th-century American painting, Western landscapes, equestrian art, and narrative American scenes. Its warm and cool color contrasts also make it an especially attractive decorative work for a library, study, lodge-inspired interior, or traditional American home.
