A Brief History of Burma Rubies

For centuries, rubies from Burma, now Myanmar, have occupied a legendary position in the world of colored gemstones. The historic Mogok Stone Tract is particularly renowned and has long been regarded as one of the world’s preeminent sources of fine ruby. GIA notes that references connecting rubies with Burma date back many centuries and that Mogok’s reputation as an important ruby source extends back more than 800 years. (gia)

Historically, fine Burmese rubies became prized for their intense red color and exceptional beauty, establishing a standard against which rubies from other localities have often been compared. The Mogok deposits occur primarily in a marble-associated geological environment, and the region has produced some of history’s most celebrated rubies. (gia)

Today, the term Burma ruby carries considerable significance among gemstone collectors. As with any important ruby, however, geographic origin and treatment status should be represented according to a recognized gemological laboratory report when one accompanies the stone.
