Description
William R. Beebe American Coastal Seascape Oil Painting, 1994 – Sailboats & Waterfront Deck
A beautifully detailed 1994 coastal oil painting by American artist William R. Beebe (b. 1956), depicting an inviting waterfront terrace overlooking a broad expanse of blue water dotted with sailboats and distant wooded islands. Two green rocking chairs rest on the sunlit deck amid colorful flowering plants, while a large sailing vessel moves gracefully across the water beyond.
Beebe is particularly recognized for his American maritime and coastal paintings, with the sea playing a central role throughout much of his career. His years living and painting along the Maine coast provided inspiration for scenes of coastal villages, historic wooden schooners, lobster boats, lighthouses, and expansive seascapes. (The paintings of William R. Beebe)
Painted in oil on canvas and signed and dated 1994 lower right, this 20″ x 30″ work demonstrates Beebe’s characteristic attention to architectural detail, light, atmosphere, and maritime subject matter. The carefully constructed composition creates a sense of depth from the foreground terrace through the water and distant shoreline, while the rocking chairs invite the viewer into the scene.
With its classic American coastal imagery and highly decorative composition, this painting would appeal to collectors of William R. Beebe paintings, Maine and New England art, maritime paintings, nautical art, American realist painting, and contemporary American seascapes.

Brief History of William R. Beebe
William R. Beebe was born in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1956 and studied Fine Art at the University of Maryland. Although he initially pursued a career in accounting, Beebe ultimately left the business world in 1990 to become a full-time professional artist. (The paintings of William R. Beebe)
The first twelve years of his professional painting career were spent in Maine, where the state’s harbors, coastal communities, schooners, lobster boats, and lighthouses became important subjects in his work. For nine of those years, he also worked as a resident artist for MBNA while continuing to develop his body of Maine maritime paintings. (The paintings of William R. Beebe)
Beebe’s work is rooted in representational painting but ranges from highly detailed realism to a looser, more impressionistic approach. He has cited artists including Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, James McNeill Whistler, Frank W. Benson, John Singer Sargent, and William Merritt Chase among his artistic influences. (Artsy)
The maritime subject of this 1994 painting is therefore especially representative of the formative period of Beebe’s career, when he was living and working along the Maine coast and establishing the coastal imagery for which he became known.
