Judith Blam (1911–2008) “New York City Street Scene” Oil on Masonite | American Urban Art

“New York City Street Scene” by Judith Blam (American, 1911–2008) is a richly textured oil on Masonite capturing the distinctive character and energy of a historic New York neighborhood. Storefronts, fire escapes, brick facades, hand-painted signs, and reflections along the street combine to create an intimate portrait of everyday city life.

Blam employs a warm, sophisticated palette of brick red, ochre, cream, blue, green, and deep brown, building the composition through expressive layers of color and architectural detail. Signs for a hand laundry, grocery store, and neighborhood businesses give the scene a wonderful sense of place and preserve a glimpse of an earlier New York streetscape.

The painting is signed lower right and measures 24″ x 33 1/2″. It is presented in a substantial light-colored frame measuring 32 1/4″ x 44 1/2″ overall, creating an impressive presentation suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

About Judith Blam

Judith Blam (1911–2008) was an American artist whose work included urban scenes and observations of everyday life. She was a student of Edward Loper Sr. Her paintings demonstrate an interest in architecture, neighborhood character, and the visual rhythms created by buildings, storefronts, signage, and city streets.

In New York City Street Scene, Blam transforms an ordinary neighborhood view into a highly engaging composition. The aging brickwork, commercial signs, fire escapes, windows, and storefronts become both a record of urban life and an expressive study of color and form. The work has particular appeal for collectors of New York City art, American urban painting, and 20th-century American art.
