Description

A dramatic original oil on canvas by Frank E. Schoonover (American, 1877–1972), one of the most important artists associated with the Golden Age of American Illustration and the Brandywine School.

This powerful maritime composition captures a terrifying moment at sea, with survivors struggling amid turbulent waves as a wrecked vessel looms behind them beneath a dark and threatening sky. Schoonover uses deep blues, greens, blacks, and flashes of white to convey the violence and movement of the water, while the illuminated figures provide a compelling focal point against the surrounding darkness.

The painting demonstrates Schoonover’s celebrated ability as a visual storyteller. Expressive brushwork, dramatic lighting, and carefully orchestrated figures create an immediate sense of danger, movement, and human emotion. The result is a striking example of the narrative realism that made Schoonover an important figure in early 20th-century American illustration.

Signed lower right, the oil on canvas measures 36″ x 27″ and is presented in a handsome gilt frame measuring 43 1/2″ x 32 1/2″ overall. Its substantial scale and dramatic subject make it an exceptional statement piece for a collection of American illustration, maritime art, Brandywine School painting, or early 20th-century American fine art.
